Osteopaths focus on the Musclo-Skeletal system (the bones, muscles, joints, ligaments and connective tissues) and the way in which this inter relates with the body as a whole. It combines scientific knowledge of anatomy and physiology and also clinical methods of investigation.
Osteopaths diagnose and treat faults which occur because of injury stress or perphaps disease. By improving the quality and range of movement of muscle and joints, the musclo-skeletal system is encouraged to work as efficiently as possible.
Treatment may include advise on exercise, stretches, posture and diet, aiming to maintain a realistic level of health and to avoid future injury.
Osteopaths are trained to determine whether their skills are relevant to the individual patient. If osteopathy is not an appropriate treatment, then an osteopath will refer back to the patient's G.P. or, in some circumstances, to another speciality.
Osteopaths treat most musclo skeletal conditions or injuries which do not require surgery.
These include:
Other conditions treated include:
Treatment may be for acute (short term) or chronic (long term) conditions. Past injury and trauma may be a predisposing factor to current problems.
